How to Start A Blog: A Beginners Guide

Building a blog/website is one the most important aspects of building your brand. If you don't have a website then how could people learn more about who you are better yet, buy from you. And okay, yes, you've been booking clients successfully through your dms but girl, this is about leveling up in your business and style. And having a website to refer people to gives you another level of authority in your industry. It lets people know that you are about your ish.

I get it. You have no idea what it means to be a blogger. But guess what, I didn't either but I knew if I wanted to grow my audience and sales that I would have to learn. Luckily, with the help of technology you can build your website on your own. You don't have to pay for an experienced designer nor do you have to have this big ass launch party. Just create the website and put content on it. That's all.

So now that I hopefully helped you simplify the benefits of owning a website, now lets get to work.

  1. Buy your Domain

  2. Choose a platform to Host it on

  3. Create bomb content

First, you will need to buy your domain. Your ‘Domain’ is the name of your site. Make it official by choosing a name that has a ‘.com’ so people will take your web page seriously. If you don’t know where to buy your domain, then read “What every blogger on a budget needs first” for links to a few domain sites that are super cheap.

Although I purchased my domain from Host Gator for $12 bucks, there is a website called Bluehost that will allow you to purchase your domain as low as $3.95.  Even if you aren’t going to start blogging right away, I suggest buying your name anyway so you could always have it for future purposes and it will always belong to you.

Now that you have purchased your name, it is time to choose which host you want to create your website on and create an account. The most asked question that I received last year was ‘what platform do I use to set up my site’?

I am currently on Squarespace which is $12 a month. Yes, it is in investment. If you don’t have the budget, then there are free options such as a platform called WIX.

Wix is a super easy platform to build your website. You could be done in less than 30 minutes #literally. When I first started blogging, I used Wix and later upgraded to SquareSpace. Don’t worry, you could always switch over to a new platform if you see that it’s not for you. There is no right or wrong.

Wordpress is another free option to look into. It has a lot more flexibility than WIX and could be used as a great website to establish your blog. Wordpress is always a good option for beginner bloggers but could be very annoying for the blogger who wants to take it serious because it can have various limitations on designing options and themes. From my experience, Wordpress is more on the intermediate side but with the right patience, you could have your website poppin' in no time!

Once you’ve made these two steps, now you could get to the fun part--designing your website! Have fun, get creative, and make it your own. It’s a bit of a learning curve but once you get the gist of it, you will be able to make it look like your dream site.

Creating your site could be frustrating so that's why I created an in-depth step by step guide for the beginner blogger. I give you practical steps for you to follow along and set up your website in no time. Download the free guide below! It's free, girl.
